A bible story about forgiveness:  Jacob and Esau (Genesis 25, 27, 32, 33)- Forgiveness Bible Story

The twins Jacob and Esau were very different from one another. One was a man’s man. Esau loved outdoor activities like tending the sheep and hunting. Jacob preferred to stay at home and learn from his mother.

One day Esau came in from the field famished. He begged Jacob to give him something to eat. In return, Jacob sold a bowl of soup to his older twin in exchange for the birthright. Esau traded the larger portion of their inheritance for a bowl of beans. (Genesis 25:29-34)

The deception continued. When their father Isaac knew he was near death he requested that his manly son Esau kill a deer to prepare a fine meal before dividing the estate. Rebbecca, the mother of the twins, heard the request and helped Jacob pull off a grand scheme to fool Isaac into giving Jacob the larger portion of the inheritance.

In the end, Jacob had to run for his life. He fled to another country to find his mother’s relatives who would care for him. It was many years before he returned to his own family. When he did, he heard that his brother Esau was looking for him. The deceiver Jacob was scared. He devised a plan so that his brother could only destroy half of Jacob’s wealth if he was caught. (Genesis 32)

When they finally met, Esau ran to Jacob and hugged him and kissed him, and showed forgiveness and mercy. He had so forgiven Jacob that he was surprised Jacob would even think that there might be hard feelings between them. (Genesis 33)

August 15 - 21 - Help!!

"Learn to Help and Receive Help From Others"

Everyone needs a little help sometimes. After all, no one is meant to go through life alone. For Christians, that's first and foremost where God comes in — He's always by your side. But after God, come you. These Bible verses encourage helping others because if life has given you blessings, it's important to share those with your community. For some people, that could mean volunteering with a local charity or donating to a good cause. For others, sharing blessings might be as simple as having an uplifting conversation with someone or lending emotional support to a friend who is going through a tough time.

Scripture: Read the following...

  •   Galatians 6:2
  •   Hebrews 13:16
  •   John 15:12
  •   Matthew 5:42

The reality is that we all come from such different families don’t we? Some of us have a bunch of siblings while others of us are only children. Some of us have both parents or step parents, or live with other relatives. Whatever your family dynamic is remember this…God knew the family He wanted you to be in to become the persona that He wanted you to be. Believe that. He gave you the family you have to refine you and strengthen you to become who he intend you to be. And granted you didn’t get to choose the family you have but you do get to choose how you act, behave, and live within whatever your family structure is like. Read - Luke 6:31.

Let’s follow His way and dare to engage in politics differently by fighting for unity. Read - Matthew 5:16 NIV.

June 21 - 27, 2020 (Roar!!!)

The prophet Daniel was living under a King who didn’t respect God. When he made prayer against the law it didn’t stop Daniel from praying. The punishment was terrible – he was thrown into a cave of lions overnight. The LORD saved Daniel and protected him from harm all night long. The next day everyone was amazed by the power of God. Just like Daniel, we can trust that Jesus will save those who follow him. No matter how bad the trouble, God has the power to save. Read - Daniel 6.

June 14 - 20, 2020 (A Giant Adventure)

This is truly a story of contrasts. Goliath was an experienced warrior; David was a shepherd. Goliath was huge; David was small. The giant wore armor; the boy refused to wear armor. The warrior carried a sword, a spear, and a shield; the shepherd carried a staff, a sling, and five smooth stones. Goliath scoffed at the God of Israel; David trusted the God of his fathers. When the dust of the battle settled, it was apparent to all that the superhuman strength of the giant Goliath was not an advantage over the almighty power of the God of Israel. Read - 1 Samuel 17:45.

When he reached adulthood Moses attempted to mete justice upon some Egyptians himself but God led him away until the time came for him to embrace God’s plans. It was not up to man. Only God could do these wonders and save his people. Read - Exodus 4:21-23.

May 24 - 30, 2020 (Jacob & Esau)

Read - Genesis 25:24-34, 27:1-26. In the Bible story today, there were two brothers. Jacob and Esau were brothers who didn’t make very good choices. Jacob was making stew one day while Esau was hunting. Esau got hungry and wanted some of the stew. What was Jacob’s choice? (have the children talk to their neighbor about what happened next – then talk with the group) Jacob decided to ask for Esau’s birthright for a bowl of stew. Did Esau agree? Yes he did—probably not the best choice. He sold his inheritance for a bowl of stew. Then Jacob did something else. He tricked his father so that he would get the blessing.

May 17 - 23, 2020 (The Test)

Abraham believed God. When God promised a son, Abraham believed in God’s promise even when he was old and it seemed impossible. Abraham loved God and wanted to obey Him. God kept His promise and gave Abraham the promised son, named Isaac. Imagine Abraham’s delight when he finally held his own baby boy after waiting so many years. Abraham loved Isaac. When he watched his baby boy grow into a young man, sometimes he would look at Isaac with so much love his heart felt like it would burst … but did Abraham love Isaac more than he loved God?

In Genesis 22, God tested Abraham. God said, “Abraham,” and Abraham answered, “Here I am” (Genesis 22:1). Imagine Abraham’s surprise when God told him to sacrifice the son he loved so much? His heart probably sank into the bottom of his stomach at the thought. God knew that Abraham loved Isaac, how could God ask such a thing?

Planning to obey God, Abraham would sacrifice Isaac. He got up early in the morning while it was still dark. He took Isaac and the wood and began the long journey to the land of Moriah, where God commanded him to sacrifice his beloved son. Do you think his steps were slow? Do you think he doubted God’s plan? Do you think those three days of travel were hard?

When they got close to the mountain, Abraham and Isaac left their servants. With only the fire, the wood and his father, Isaac asked, “…where is the lamb for the offering?” Abraham answered, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son” (Genesis 22: 8).

On top of the mountain, Abraham prepared to obey God, when an angel called him to stop. “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him for now I know you fear God, seeing how you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me” (Genesis 22:12). Looking up, Abraham saw a ram God provided for Abraham to sacrifice.

God loved Abraham. As much as Abraham loved Isaac, Abraham proved that he loved God more. God doesn’t want us to love anything or anyone more than we love Him.

May 10 - 16, 2020 (Obedience by Faith)

SuperTruth: By faith, I will obey God.

SuperVerse: It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before. Hebrews 11:7a (nlt)

Bible Story: Genesis 6–9

“By faith, I will obey God.” Whatever God says, we need to obey. This isn’t always easy, especially when we don’t fully understand why He is asking us to do something or how we are to do it. God told Noah that a flood was coming—something that had never been seen before. Even though many years would pass before the flood took place, Noah believed every word God spoke and obeyed God by faith. Let’s say our Super Truth together again. “By faith, I will obey God.”

May 3 - 9, 2020 (Paul and Barnabas)

Have you had someone encourage, support, or defend you in a difficult time? Barnabas was this type of person. He always seemed to come alongside others who needed help. He was an encourager; so much so that the meaning of the nickname the other apostles gave him was “Son of Encouragement” (Acts 4:36). He had a desire to help others grow in the Lord and to function in the gift and calling God had for them. He was willing to support others when it seemed no one else would.

We see that with Saul (Paul), John Mark, and the churches that Paul and he ministered to. (Acts 9:26-28; Acts 11:22-23; Acts 14:21-25; Acts15:36-39). Have you ever been around someone that seems to delight in kicking others when they are down? They choose to tear down or condemn others when they make a mistake or fall into sin instead of building up and helping them to overcome. As followers of Christ, we have a responsibility and a calling to be like Barnabas; to build up instead of tear down. The Bible calls us to be encouragers. “Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid.

But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.” Rather than kick others when they are down, we are called to reach out and help them up. This is what Barnabas did and this is what Jesus did while He was on the earth. He reached out and touched those who others had written off and cast aside. (Isaiah 61:1; Matthew 18:11; John 3:17; Luke 5:31).

April 26 - May 2, 2020 (Paul and Silas)

Paul and Silas attempted to go to several countries on their missionary journey. However, the Holy Spirit did not allow them to enter certain areas. God then spoke to Paul in a vision instructing him to go to Macedonia in the country of Greece. Paul and Silas immediately boarded a boat to sail there. Paul and Silas listened to the Holy Spirit and followed God's plan rather than their own (Acts 16:6-10). As followers of Christ, God's Spirit lives in us. The Holy Spirit will guide us, as He did Paul and Silas, if we are willing to follow His voice. Galatians 5:25, says, "Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit's leading in every part of our lives."

As with Paul, the Holy Spirit will lead us to people that need to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit will also illuminate God's word and give us wisdom and understanding to make right choices and decisions. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path." Jesus called His followers sheep. Sheep need a shepherd to care for them, to lead, and to protect them. Jesus said in John 10:27, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." Yes, God's Spirit will guide us - will we follow?

April 19-25, 2020 ( Paul and the Shipwreck)

Grace is receiving something you don’t deserve. That is different from the concept of mercy. Mercy is not receiving punishment for something that you do deserve. In the English New Testament, the word “grace” is always a translation of “charis,” a word that occurs in the Greek text more than 170 times. The apostle Peter writes, “May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord” (2 Peter 1:2). Grace is a gift of God. It is God intervening in our lives to bring about His will despite the circumstances that we may face.

There may be times where we make mistakes. It seems like we dig ourselves into a hole that we can't get out of. God's grace is there to pull us up out of that hole without us doing anything to escape. If you find yourself in a position where it seems that there is no answer or there is no way out, ask God to bring His grace into that situation. Then continue to thank Him for working in your life. The blessing of God comes to us despite our weakness, our failures, and our sin. That is why the great hymn writer, John Newton, who himself had been captain of a slave ship, was able to receive God's forgiveness and write these words in his timeless hymn: "Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found, was blind, but now I see."

April 12-18, 2020 (Road to Damascus)

Saul believed strongly in the Jewish faith of his ancestors. He violently persecuted God’s church and tried to destroy it. (Gal. 1:13-14) He dragged believers from their houses and put them in prison. He approved of the stoning of Stephen, the first Christian martyr. Saul thought he was doing the right thing by defending Judaism, but God’s purposes could not be stopped. As Saul was on his way to arrest believers in Damascus, the Lord stopped him in his tracks. Jesus revealed Himself to Saul, and Saul was never the same.
